CASE STUDY: Andrew Mackie

Developing a long term relationship with your business advisor.

Incite consultants have been working with Dennis Loudoun and his family company, Bevelite Glass for over 10 years. Dennis led Bevelite through a massive growth phase over its first 23 years to its position now as a highly successful glass manufacturing business located in Western Sydney.

  • 2000: Prepared a Feasibility Study and Financing Proposal for the purchase of the first glass toughening furnace for Bevelite. The Financing Proposal was successful in obtaining lease finance from Bevelite’s Bank to purchase the toughening furnace. Over the next 2 years, sales increased by 65%, margins increased by over 10% and net profit increased tenfold;
  • 2003: Prepared a Valuation of the Bevelite business to verify the increase in the value of the business over the past 3 years and inform Dennis for his personal financial planning purposes;
  • 2004: Prepared a Project Financial Plan for an expansion strategy for Bevelite which included the purchase of a second larger toughening furnace, ancillary equipment and to obtain additional factory premises. Once again this Plan was successful in gaining lease finance for the new equipment and in the next 3 years sales increased by another 55%;
  • 2004: Conducted interviews of senior staff to access: training needs, satisfaction levels; career aspirations; job descriptions; and recommendations for improvements. Resulted in a strategy to up-skill staff and develop a career progression strategy for suitable staff;
  • 2004: Provided an assessment of a third party valuation of the Bevelite business and compared that to an update of Incite’s 2003 Valuation;
  • 2006/2007: Developed and implemented a Succession Strategy for Bevelite to allow Dennis to gradually reduce his involvement in the management of the business over the next 5 years, which included:
    • Conducting further staff interviews with the objective of strengthening the management team to understudy Dennis and other senior management;
    • Facilitating management meetings to involve senior management in the operations of the business and develop a management reporting package, agendas and prepare minutes; and
    • Mentoring Dennis’s Daughter, Karen as General Manager Designate to up-skill her on management and financial issues;
  • 2006/2007: Project managed a new Branding strategy and production of a new web site for Bevelite and provided general sales and marketing advice;
  • 2008/2009: Liaised with Dennis’s external Accountant on financial planning and corporate governance issues. Dennis was then successful in selling the Bevelite business to the Australian Glass Group for a substantial consideration. Dennis remains as an advisor to Bevelite but now has the time to pursue other business interests including being part of a consortium to run the Parramatta City Raceway;
  • 2009/2010: Incite introduced Dennis to a new business opportunity to invest in a business manufacturing the Terrier Mini Loader previously owned by Allan Collins. Incite continues to assist Dennis and Allan in the Terrier business with input including:
    • Preparing investment documentation including: Information Memorandum; Memorandum of Understanding; and Shareholders Agreement;
    • Developing a business plan including: detailed costings and budgets; business and operational model; and an ongoing Action Plan;
    • Assisting in general and financial management of the business;
    • Facilitating regular management meetings and assisting in the implementation of action points; and
    • Developing a sales and marketing strategy.
