Case Study - Luela

Business Mentoring - Establishing a new brand in a challenging climate

Emerging fashion brand Luela has been working with Incite for the last 18 months, receiving business mentoring from two of Incite's team as part of the federal government's Indiginous Business Australia business development program.

Luela's two owners have very different strengths and interests which they combine to great effect. Julie is the creative face of the Luela brand; designing the collections and fronting up to buyers to sell each season's range. Brenda has the unenviable task of ensuring that everything runs smoothly behind the scenes, coordinating production and ensuring each piece is top quality and on schedule - which she does with great skill.

Initially Luela's owners sought business modeling and financial expertise, something they knew nothing about. Incite guided them through the process of putting together a Business Plan and assisted with Sales Forecasting. With sales targets came the need for agents and a sudden need for HR experience.

Julie and Brenda recall that in the early days they knew little about running a business and found the whole thing overwhelming. They now feel much more in control of their own destiny but recognize the benefits of continued mentoring and support. Although they have learnt an enormous amount in the last 18 months, they still feel they have a long way to go and would feel lost if they were on their own. They put their relationship with Incite down to trust.

For the Luela girls this trip to New York in January 2010 with one of the Incite partners is an exciting opportunity to meet overseas agents, retail buyers and media. They know that with each new opportunity comes the possibility of new challenges and a need for more mentoring!
