Monthly Incite from Anthony Moss .... stranded in Chicago

Anthony Moss

Well, there are worse places to be stranded ... strolling down Michigan Avenue is pretty good!

Having visited the National Art Materials Trade Show in Indianapolis last week, I was meant to head to the UK and beyond but Eyjafjallajokull (that's a tough one!) put a stop to that so I'm now heading back to Sydney.

I've visited this trade show many times, both as an exhibitor and now on behalf of clients.  With time on my hands I reflected on the change in this and other industry trade shows I've visited over the last few years.

The global art material industry is challenged by the same trends as many other industries -
1. Globalisation: suppliers from all countries attack all markets
2. Consolidation: at supplier/manufacturer and retail level - hence there has been a reduction in the number of independent suppliers and retailers
3. Product Proliferation: many suppliers are selling the "same stuff" branded or packaged differently
4. Marketing: a rise in companies managing all aspects of their brand but outsourcing the supply chain
5. Innovation: small niche players developing interesting new products
6. Green Marketing: either real or "GREENWASH".

Does this picture reflect your industry?  If so, how do you respond to these trends?  Do they help or challenge your business?  There are positive and negative aspects to these trends, depending on whether you are the consolidating or consolidated, whether you are innovating or protecting your market from innovators.

In the coming weeks, I will profile companies that are successfully responding to these challenges. This month check out http://www.clementineart.com

Case Study - Thullii Dreaming

Incite client Thullii Dreaming is a dynamic small business teetering on the brink of an exciting but almost overwhelming phase of development.  Like many small businesses, it is currently faced with the challenges of financing new growth and weighing up all the options before taking the leap of faith required to capitalize on significant opportunities.  This is a common dilema amongst SME owners and many of you will have been in a similar situation. How to finance the next phase of business growth?  Is it a reasonable risk?  What will happen if we do refinance and more importantly, what will happen if we don't?  Read more

Thinking of doing business with India?

In addition to Austrade and other state government resources, Incite has established a relationship with Wealthtree (India), an organisation that facilitates establishing operations in India. Read More about the challenges and immense opportunities of doing business in India.
