Working with Mulwarra Export

A NEW PRO-ACTIVE CULTURE LEADS TO EVEN GREATER SUCCESS

Mulwarra Export meat and seafood export business was at a crucial point of change some 4 years ago when its owner turned to Incite Management. Although very successful - with an annual turnover of $19M - Greg Darwell likens his business at that time to a reactive organization with little formal structure and few reporting lines - rather like the proverbial bowl of spaghetti!

Incite Management worked closely with Mulwarra Export, analysing the business and evaluating staff. Revised business structures and systems were implemented and new personnel were recruited. This was followed by additional finance and accounting resources to free up the time of the MD to focus more on building the business, supported by a motivated and dedicated team. As a result, Mulwarra Export was able to transition to what is now a global business with an annual turnover close to $50M.

Greg says
"The Australian meat industry has changed beyond recognition over the last decade. Small players have suffered from the slim margins and there has been a significant increase in international ownership with economies of scale".

In-depth sales planning and analysis now takes place by product category. In addition, a new trading system with a customized and fully-integrated foreign currency management system has recently been implemented. All of this allows the sales team to track and report on sales, budgets and results in real time and provides management with an up to date currency position on all sales and customers on demand.

Incite worked with the Mulwarra Export team and an Enterprise Connect program* to explore, develop and manage overseas sales opportunities through a CRM system integrated into the company's trading system.

Implementing the new Mulwarra Export/Incite Management initiatives created a seismic shift in the culture of the business which in turn has made the business infinitely more professional and proactive rather than reactive.

The Mulwarra brand is well established and well regarded. The company focuses on supplying hotels, restaurants and the top end of the market through quality distributors in Asia, The Middle East, Russia and Europe –and continues to supply airline caterers and retailers directly.

Greg's vision for the future is clear. To build a sustainable business in an industry which not only continues to change more rapidly and significantly than most but which is also highly regulated and subject to state and federal government policy changes and charges. In spite of that, he believes the market will continue to grow with GDP and population growth, underscored by Australia's "clean and green" reputation. Australia is well placed in terms of its highly sought after meat and food products, its processing capacities and agricultural land and as a result, it attracts significant interest and investment global operations; a trend that is likely to continue.
